The Detroit Lions put on a (mostly) impressive performance against the Chicago Bears at Ford Field on Sunday which led to Facebook statuses across the interwebs to explode with Lions joy.
“#1 in the North!”
“Bears Down! Go Lions!”
“Holy crap, the Lions are #1 in the NFC North! They could be legit contenders!”
Just keep telling yourself this one phrase, and repeat it as needed.
It’s only week 4.
Yes, things went well for the Detroit Lions on Sunday. The offense seemed to find a much needed rhythm and balance with Reggie Bush putting on a clinic. The passing game was working too, including everyone catching passes from Pettigrew to Durham. The vaunted defensive line was playing like they’ve been expected to, getting to Jay Cutler with just 4 on the rush. They pressured, hurried and harassed the Chicago QB and the secondary held up despite the injury to CB Rashean Mathis. Louis Delmas looked more like Da Missile and Glover Quin showed why so many people in the NFL are fans of his style of play.
But it’s only week 4.
The Lions SHOULD have slammed the door on the Bears multiple times. They SHOULD have stayed so far ahead that an onside kick with time winding down was merely a formality and not an actual threat. Detroit allowed Chicago to get back into the game. They let the Bears drive down the field and score. The impressive stat of the day before Chicago’s final drive was the Detroit defense not allowing them to convert a single third down. On that final drive, the Bears converted on 2 fourth down plays and the final touchdown was the first third down conversion of the game.
Remember, it’s only week 4.
Don’t take this as a buzz kill but merely a reminder of the facts. It is early in the NFL season. ANYTHING can happen at this point! Remember the Arizona Cardinals starting 4-0 last season? And look what has happened to that team since then. This Lions team is better than last season to be sure, the additions of Reggie Bush and Glover Quin in the off season all but cemented that. However, this is still a team that’s making too many mistakes to be among the league elites. Could the Lions have pulled off what the Seahawks did on Sunday? How about what the Patriots did by holding off the Falcons?
It’s only week 4.
While it’s nice to not be panicking or writing poetry, Lions fans need to dial down the proclamations just a smidge. Let’s see how things go in Green Bay first, huh?
