The Detroit Red Wings are 1-1 in the preseason following a visit to Chicago to take on the defending Stanley Cup champs.
But it was penalties ... and ejections ... that did in the Wings as they lost to the Hawks, 2-0.
Right from the drop of the puck, the Red Wings had their work cut out for them as they racked up excess penalty minutes.
The first of the Hawk's powerplays came after Teemu Pulkkinen laid out Michael Kostka. For his troubles, Pulkkinen got a five-minute major and was ejected from the game.
In all, the Blackhawks had four powerplay opportunities in the 1st, but were not able to capitalize as Jonas Gustavsson racked up 13 saves in the period.
The 2nd period started out much like the 1st as Grand Rapids Griffins regular Mitch Callahan was tossed for boarding, leading to a five-minute powerplay for the Hawks. But yet again, the Wings were able to kill it.
But just like that, the Blackhawks went up 2-0 late in the second on goals by Patrick Sharp and Ben Smith.
Gustavsson ended the night with 21 saves.
The Red Wings were without Johan Franzen, out with a lower-body injury.
