Welcome to the Eastern Conference, Red Wings.
The Detroit Red Wings jump right into the regular season this October, in the friendly confines of the Joe Louis Arena in an inter-Atlantic Division matchup.
The 2013-14 NHL schedule was released on Friday, and the Red Wings will host the Buffalo Sabres in the season opener on Wednesday night, October 2nd.
The NHL also finalized their realignment by naming it's new divisions. The Red Wings will play in the Eastern Conference's Atlantic Division, joined by the Sabres, the Boston Bruins, the Florida Panthers, the Montreal Canadians, the Ottawa Senators, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
In addition to the NHL Winter Classic featuring the Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs on New Years Day 2014, there will be three more outdoor games in January with two additional in March.
Plus, since 2014 is an Olympic year, there will be a two-week break from February 9th through February 25th.
And the conferences aren't the only thinsg that have changed -- so have the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
A new division-based playoff format will take effect this season, with the top three finishers in each division qualifying for the first 12 playoffs spots. The two remaining spots in each conference will be "wild cards," awarded to the next two-highest finishers from each
conference regardless of division.
